Unboxing
Let’s start by taking a look at the contents in the box. Tecno Camon 18i phone comes in a silver box and at the front is the Camon 18i branding. Opening the box. you will be greeted with the phone wrapped in plastic with some specifications. Deeper in you will find your warranty card, a TPU case, and another smaller box that hides the same ejector tool, Micro USB cable, earphone, and charger.
Design
This phone is available in these color options, Deep Sea, Frost Silver, and Tranquil Green. You will love the double-color tune at the back of the device. Tecno Camon 18i is made of plastic and it has a sort of Matte finish. The phone has a fingerprint scanner at the back. And it is quite responsive. This rear sensor is so secure and useful.
There are triple cameras at the back and they sit in a blue glossy bump. Besides them is the LED flash. But more on the cameras in a bit. This phone charges via a micro USB, bummer! USB-C should be the standard by now. Anyway, this phone has a downside speaker. Upfront is a camera cut out by the left. And the phone supports a dual SIM card and also has an SD card slot. The phone feels comfortable to hold in the hand thanks to its rather compact design and good weight distribution.
Display
Now the Tecno Camon 18i has that sweet spot 6.6-inch display. The resolution of the display is set at 720 x 1640 pixels. I think for the price, this can be forgiven because Camon 18i has a 90Hz refresh rate. You also have the option to switch back to 60 Hz or use the auto-switch refresh rate that switches according to your usage. A higher refresh rate basically makes scrolling faster and it also makes the animation look better. Yeah, this display is IPS LCD, and it’s not the brightest outdoors.
Camera
There is a have a 48 MP, (wide), AF main camera on Tecno Canon 18i accompanied by a 2MP mega depth sensor and a and 2MP macro camera. Upfront is a 16 MP, f/2.0 shooter with a flash. It is clear that the main focus of this phone is its main 48MP shooter which takes alright pics. And video recording with it, as well as with the selfie shooter is 1080p@30fps.
Performance
Moving away from the display, let’s touch upon the operating system and performance of Tecno Camon 18i. The phone was running on 11 with HIOS 7.6 at launch. Guess what, this one will receive Android 12 with HiOS 8.5. As usual, it comes pre-loaded with bloatware apps that thankfully can be removed.
The UI is a little bit redefined. In that, you swipe on the left to get access to the notification shade, right to get access to the control center. It takes a bit of getting used to especially if you have not 3 minute ab workouts used an iPhone or Xiami before. Yes, this UI borrows a heap from iOS. The Camon 18i is powered by the MediaTek Helio G85 chipset. It’s a decent chipset that is built on a 12-nanometer processor. Also on board is the Mali-G52 MC2 GPU. Again, 128GB of internal storage with 4GB RAM
Battery
You are guaranteed a full day of usage with Tecno Camon 18i’s Li-Po 5000 mAh, non-removable battery. If you turn off the higher refresh rate, you can even extend the battery life because it significantly drains the battery. The charger in the box charges the phone from zero to a hundred in about two hours. You should expect at least seven hours of screen on time under heavy use. The battery life is okay on this phone.
Our take
The Tecno Camon 18i is the most affordable of the Camo 18 series. It has some interesting specs for a device that has a price of less than KES 20,000. This phone was released in 2021, November 01. As you might know, the Camon series by Tecno focuses on on-camera performance. And to be honest Camon 18i has somewhat lived to that expectation.
