Design and build
The Tecno Camon 18 Premier may not be a true flagship phone, but it sure looks premium. With its flat tempered glass back covered in a silky matte finish. Look a bit closer, and you’ll notice that the curved glossy frame is not made out of metal, but plastic. But still, the overall design is eye-catching with little details like the red accent around the ultra-wide camera. The front of the phone is also covered in tempered glass. It’s a 6.7 inch AMOLED with a 1080P resolution and a punch hole for the selfie shooter
For audio, the Tecno Camon 18 Premier has a traditional 3.5-millimeter jack for headphones and there’s FM radio support too. There’s also a single bottom-firing loudspeaker which earns a rating of good on loudness charts. Some quality is impressive. The highs are decent although you will notice some lack when it comes to the base. And to wake up and unlock, you can use the side-mounted fingerprint reader built into the power button. It is fast and reliable.
Superb stabilized cameras
Now onto the Tecno Camon 18 Premier’s triple cameras. There’s a 64-megapixel quad main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide with gimble stabilization, and an 8-megapixel Periscope telephoto with 5X optical zoom. Photos from the main camera come out in 16 megapixels. They have good contrast and low noise, and true-to-life colors for the most part. To get an improved level of detail is if you shoot in the 64-megapixel mode and then downscale the photos to 16 megapixels.
Portraits are taken with the main cam and they’re good. Shots from the ultra-wide have accurate colors, good contrast, well-handled noise, and a wide dynamic range. It is not the most ultra-wide camera thought when compared to others, even at this price point. Selfies on the other hand come out in 8 megapixels and they are good. They’re sharp and detailed with good skin tones, plenty of contrast, and okay dynamic range. Video recording for some reason maxes out at 1440P on the main camera rather than 4K.
Display
The 120 Hertz refresh rate makes swiping and scrolling noticeably smoother. There’s no support for high frame rate gaming though. It’s nice to have an AMOLED for its great contrast and deep blacks. But compared to a flagship screen, where there’s no HDR support and colors tend to turn towards blueish. And the brightness of this screen measures up to a maximum of 425 nits. The Camon 18 Premier has something like an always-on display. It shows you time and notifications, but only when you pick up or move the phone.
Platform
The interface of Tecno Camon 18 Premier is HIOS 8.0 based on Android 11, it features a bunch of proprietary apps and their own app store. There’s also a smart panel that stores shortcuts and slides out from the edge of the home screen. A lot less unnecessary apT here compared to some of Tecno’s less expensive phones. Storage is expandable through micro SD on top of the already beefy 256 GB built-in. At the heart of Camon 18, Premier is a Mediatek Helio G96 (12 nm) chipset. Performance-wise the phone does a decent job. The thermals are respectable too.
Battery
Powering this premier phone is a not so premier Li-Po 4750 mAh, non-removable battery. Interestingly, even with what seems like a not-so-good battery capacity given the company’s reputation, the battery life here is great. You also get a 33-watt fast charger in the box. And with it, you will be able to charge the phone from zero to 60% in half an hour.
